Free Wildflower
Seed Packets

Wildflower Seed PacketsEnviro-Explorers are kids doing things to help protect their environment. Planting wildflowers is a fun and easy way for you to get involved.

Wildflowers attract butterflies and provide a place for wildlife to live. They also add beauty and color to the landscape.

Grayhead coneflower seed packet

The Iowa Department of Transportation is helping Iowa kids start their own wildflower patch by providing them with a free Grayhead coneflower wildflower seed packet.  The Grayhead coneflower grows readily from seed and is a good choice for starting a garden of prairie flowers.

Grayhead coneflowersThe Grayhead coneflower (Ratibida pinnata) is sometimes called the "Yellow coneflower."  It has long, yellow ray flowers that droop from a spherical gray "cone."  It attracts butterflies and song birds, and makes an attractive border for a background planting.  The Grayhead coneflower is a long-lived, true prairie plant native to tall-grass prairies.  The American Indians made a tea from the flower cones and the leaves of the Grayhead coneflower.  The Meskwaki used the root to cure toothaches. It does well in a wide range of soils in sun to partial shade, and tolerates drought.  A perennial, the Grayhead coneflower grows to a height of 3 to 5 feet, and blooms in June to August.
