Great Horned Owl

The Great horned owl is a very large owl - 20 inches in length with a wingspan of 55 inches! It has prominent ear tufts, yellow eyes and a dark bill. Upperparts of its body are mottled brown, gray and black.

This owl is a permanent resident in Iowa and does not migrate. The diet of the Great horned owl primarily consists of mammals. This is probably why you will find them in living snow fences - looking for small animals to eat.
